Vocation Story: Growing up, I really never thought about priesthood. I served at Mass throughout my childhood, and went to Catholic schools, but the thought of a vocation was a rare occurrence. It was not until the summer after my junior year of high school that I seriously began to think about actually going to seminary. I had begun to read the Diary of St. Faustina Kowalska, and had been very intrigued by her accounts of her confessions and the mercy of God. This book led me to a far deeper prayer than ever before, and I found myself praying about my vocation.
Although I had been thinking about it, I did not apply for seminary during my senior year because of a dating relationship I was in. My girlfriend and I ended up breaking up the summer after my senior year, so I began, once again, to pray about my vocation as I entered Eastern Illinois University to study Music and Mathematics. While there, in the prayerful and supportive environment of the Newman center, I became good friends with two other discerning men (now seminarians) and the two priests in town. Through prayer, their support, and the support of my family and many other friends, I made the choice to apply and go to seminary.
